The collection consists of twenty-two items, mainly legal and business documents of Joseph Lynde, Sr., and Jr., both of whom were merchants. Included in the collection are several land deeds, wills, promissory notes, bills, inventories, bonds, an arrest warrant, the marriage settlement of Joseph Lynde, Sr., and Mary Winthrop, and a power of attorney. There is also a letter from Jonathan Green ( - ) to Jonathan Lynde ( - ) in Worcester (dated 11 November 1755), describing the scene in Probate Court when the will of Lynde's mother was entered by Green and contested by Lynde's brother Jacob ( - ). The collection also contains a deposition with a comment by Justice Samuel Sewall concerning a family dispute over Joseph Lemmon's will, and a letter by Joseph Lynde, Jr., to the U.S. Congress in 1782 requesting that he be granted an allowance for the destruction of his land in Charlestown in 1775 through the digging of trenches by the American Army.

Joseph Lemmon (1692-1750) was the son of Joseph Lemmon (1662-1709), of Charlestown, Mass., and Mary Bradley Lemmon ( - ), and the husband of Elizabeth Phillips (1692-1784). He lived in Charlestown as a wealthy merchant and extensive landowner, and held the offices of town treasurer, and justice of the peace for Middlesex County. Two of his children were Joseph (1715-1772) and Mary (1717-1798), who married, in 1736, Joseph Lynde (1702-1788), of Charlestown, also a noted merchant and landowner. ...

Three generations of the Lynde family of Charlestown, Mass., are represented in this collection. Joseph Lynde (1636-1727) married Mary Winthrop ( -1715) and they were the parents of Nicholas Lynde (1665-1703). His son, Joseph Lynde, Jr. (1702-1798) of Charlestown and Worcester, Mass., married Mary Lemmon (1717-1798). They were the parents of seventeen children, among them Anna (1747-1829) and Dorothy (1746-1837). The latter married Dr. Elijah Dix ( -1819) of Worcester. They were the grandparents...
